DBR Lab: Spring 2021

The Spring 2021 cohort for DBR Lab was in residence at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center for the season. The Kerr staff provided professional development sessions and support for filming and recording at their historical venue in Scottsdale, Arizona. Due to the pandemic, the final performance was broadcast as a collection of 10-minute films produced by each contributor. The class was co-facilitated by Daniel Bernard Roumain and Jeff McMahon; managed by Malena Grosz; and featured guest lecturer, Lady Caress. Portraits and Living Headshot films were produced and edited by Keegan Carlson.

FLORENCIA DURÓN

PhD: Communication & MC: Counseling

EN: Florencia Durón is a Mexican artist. Her project, Handpan Podcast, showcases true stories of transformation. Florencia plays the handpan live while a guest performs a personal narrative. The soothing sound of the handpan captivated Florencia, who decided to create this podcast to collaborate, play, and combine two of her passions -- music and storytelling.

ANTON LAPOV

MFA: Digital Technology

Anton Lapov is a media artist, computer musician and curator from Ukraine. His artistic practice combines methodologies of humanities with computational aesthetics ideas. He focuses on exploring ecosystems via data visualization and sonification, researching the militarization of societies by means of web-based art, and problematics of alternative communication systems through the lens of radio-art.

Tool Study #1 is a real-time presentation of an audiovisual interface for sound-synthesis and control. Keeping attributes of “product demo” display, the author reveals biases of the hyper-rationalized ideology of digital cultural production. Using his voice as the main input data, he introduces unpredicted variables for the algorithm to maintain control and performative precision.

ONOH

MFA: MFA: Interdisciplinary Theatre (Digital Media & Performance)

ONOH is an interdisciplinary artist who takes many forms - animator, educator, performer and creative coder. Blending digital software and performance techniques, she designs interactive audio-visual ecosystems where human and other bodies are engaged in a playful performance of call and response. ONOH believes that play and technology shape our perception, leading to discoveries that challenge our assumptions about the world around us, our presences in it, our relationships and responsibilities to each other. ONOH exhibits her art internationally and currently expands her knowledge at Arizona State University.

LAWSON MALNORY

MA: Ethnomusicology

Lawson Malnory is a musician from Dallas, Texas. His music examines the ego through sound and poetry. His song, Two Thousand & One, challenges listeners to reflect on history. For those who claim to be experts and wield their interpretation of the past as a weapon, Lawson encourages humility, caution, and patience. To those who claim no awareness of the past, Lawson encourages the pursuit of curiosity and the embracing of naivete, which is above all things a definitive and enduring trait of human beings. The music video features Lawson playing three characters as they discover the profound nature of the passage of time: Generic 90s Hockey Fan, Generic 2021 Hockey Fan, and Euclid.

BFA: DANCE

Avery Polster is a [performer/mover/artist]. He strips down the layers of himself, to explore under the skin into delicately twisted insides. Extremes and scale such as the fragility of an eggshell crackling, the wrenching of a heart, the sliding of glaciers, or the intimate softness of a whisper are the root of This is not a Tragedy. Curiosity and dialogue surrounding endings are gradually layered into a surreal landscape supported by specific movement vocabularies and performative aspects. He navigates the world he has built with fresh eyes and plays with how the language can be constantly refined and specified.
